State officials gathered on Kelleys Island on Friday, May 19th to rededicate the Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve, one of the most significant landmarks in the Great Lakes region. The Glacial Grooves are remnants from the time when a vast ice sheet covered North America thousands of years ago and are considered the largest geological feature of their kind on Earth
Twenty-five years ago Bruce Korenko, then president of the Park Board, worked with the State Park and a group of volunteers cut the trails that led to an old homesite that had multiple colors of lilacs which flourished on the property for the last 100 years. The pathways have been expanded and maintained by the State Park, who added the signage and took on the mowing that was previously done by volunteers. A wonderful island trail that walks you back in time.
